Complete Infant Vaccine Uptake

Study Title:

Individual and contextual determinants of complete infant vaccination: A comparative study of Bangladesh and Pakistan using the DHS, 2017-18

Study Goals:

  • To determine the association between sociodemographic variables and complete infant immunization in Bangladesh and Pakistan.

  • To identify variations in government policies at the regional level that may correlate with complete immunization rates in Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Background:

  • Complete and timely infant vaccination is crucial for creating herd immunity and preventing death, disease, and disability.

  • With 2024 marking the 50th year of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), it is important to quantify how much progress Bangladesh and Pakistan have made towards achieving universal infant vaccine coverage.

  • As the 2030 deadline for Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) approaches, it is crucial to determine which countries have made progress toward attaining SDG 3.

Key Contributions:

  • Analyzed the data

  • Created data visualizations

  • Drafted parts of the manuscript

  • Designed and co-presented a poster at the 2024 Montclair State University Student Research Symposium

Methods:

  • Secondary data analysis

  • Logistic regression and descriptive statistics using R programming

Participants:

  • Survey data from 1,625 Bangladeshi children and 2,065 Pakistani children

Findings:

  • In both Bangladesh and Pakistan, maternal education is statistically significantly correlated with complete infant vaccination.

Implications:

  • Bangladesh and Pakistan should implement a comprehensive educational program targeting mothers.

  • These countries should expand access to healthcare services by increasing community outreach, messaging efforts, and mobile medical vans.

Future Research:

  • Analyze longitudinal data to identify trends in vaccination rates.

  • Examine the association between child immunization rates and community-level variables.
